Contemporary Wood Furniture- Style Plus Function!

With all the haste and rush in their lifestyle, people today prefer furniture that is simple and functional. They want furniture that could be used in ‘not so delicate’ manner because time is very less to spend on maintaining furniture. However, people have also become more aesthetic, so they don’t want to compromise on the beauty aspect of any furniture! What’s the result then? It’s the evolution of contemporary wood furniture which is functional and stylish too!

Simple Cuts and Shapes: People today want to spend more time with their families at home- in a very informal way. The trend for casual living has led the modern furniture to become multi-functional with clean uncluttered lines. People are turning towards durable materials and so wood furniture tops the list. Light woods dominate the modern furniture of today- oak, cherry, and birch being the most popular woods, with rattan and bamboo increasingly getting popular due to the growing preference for eco-friendly furniture. http://crafts-textiles-guide.blogspot.com/2009/09/eco-friendly-wood-furniture-go-green.html However, simplicity doesn’t mar beauty. Style is still maintained through varnished solid fronts combined with veneered bodies and stainless steel. Other materials that are combined with wood to make it trendy include aluminum and boldly colored fiberglass and satin glass.

Incorporated Gadgets: A wooden sofa is not only a seating option now! Multi-media applications are liberally applied to the wooden furniture. Flat loudspeakers are being incorporated into slim, spacious sofas, covered in dark trendy upholstery fabrics. LED lighting technology can be seen on wooden coffee tables. And what more? These lights change depending on the mood required! The modern furniture has all got futuristic!

Teak Garden Furniture

This durability not only affects the price, it affects the usage of the product, too. Who wants to sit on a rickety chair or at a wobbly table? If you have guests, do you really want them sat at some modern monstrosity of moldy or peeling plastic? Sit them on your heavy duty teak garden furniture around a teak table and you will almost certainly get some admiring comments.

When shopping for teak garden furniture, it is important to look out for the heavy duty variety since their are some lower quality (and, it has to be said, cheaper) which do not last as long as the more solid version. You’ve come this far, don’t economize now!

Maintenance of teak garden furniture is minimal. If you want, you can take the benches, chairs and tables in over the winter but, provided you apply a coat or two of teak oil every Spring, it should come to no harm. Teak oil can be purchased from any big DIY center and a little goes a long way. Don’t use creosote, linseed oil or any other solvent – insist on teak oil and you will be rewarded with a piece of furniture that looks as good as the day you bought it. Why not take the opportunity to do a little ‘annual service’ and check the nuts and bolts that hold the furniture together?

We don’t take our teak garden furniture in. Living where we do, there are sunny days even in the middle of winter and it is a real luxury to be able to take a mug of tea or coffee, some biscuits and a good book, sit down on a teak bench and go and take in some sunshine and fresh air.

In fact, it’s such a good idea, I think I’ll grab that hot drink and go and use our teak garden furniture!

Teenage Bedrooms and the Art of Compromise

When decorating a teen’s bedroom, there is so much more at stake than simply a tasteful finish. Teenagers want their bedrooms to express their individual style and who they are becoming as they mature. The most success teen bedrooms are ones that involved the teens themselves in the majority of the d?cor decision making. For your teenager, it is more about being treated like a young adult and feeling trusted than the d?cor itself, so try be open minded to their ideas and be willing to compromise. Introducing a set of boundaries and guidelines right from the start will avoid any tantrums and show let them know you are willing to bend within reason.

Unlike rooms for young children, their probably won’t be an overall theme to the room as the interests and influences of teenagers vary greatly and alter rapidly. A much more eclectic style is probably more likely to keep them entertained.

When your teenage son or daughter shocks you with the news of their intention to paint their room black, this is not normally something driven by morbid woes. What this act really is, is an attempt to be taken more seriously and move away from the frills and pinks or blues and balls. Instead of black, offer some other equally sophisticated shades such as a deep aubergine, rich burgundy or chic teal or cappuccino. Then add some dark wooden blinds for real urban cool. And seen as they want to be treated like grown ups explain that grown ups have pictures rather than posters, obviously you must allow them their heroes so offer to better hang their poster collection in some youthful frameless glass mounts. Mix this up with some contemporary wall art.

When choosing furniture remember to consider any hobbies your teen might have. We know that teenagers spend a lot of time surfing the net, listening to music and playing games on their video consoles so look for contemporary furniture that helps house such activities.

Bedspreads, cushions, beanbags and any other soft furnishing are all temporary and can be changed at any point so use such items to show how much space to make decisions you are allowing your teen by giving them total say over them.

Be wary of making your teenagers bedrooms too much of a haven, and certainly do not include a microwave- it may seem like a long way off but one day you will want them to actually leave! Stay alert for tell tale signs that your teen is setting up a landlord free home for life and look out for the following classic give aways- a bath, a toilet, a fridge or, if for instance your address happens to be No 11 Long Lane, any mail suspiciously addressed to No. 11A!

Hopefully all of the clever compromising will pay off as with a room that they feel they had a big influence in designing, your teenagers will treat the space with respect consider it their responsibility- perhaps for a whole week!
